Listening Lunches at BHS and Trek

The BYAC will be hosting Listening Lunches at both Bemidji High School and TrekNorth on March 3rd and March 2nd, respectively. The focus this time will be on how to choose a college and what you need to know to apply for financial aide/scholarships. Free pizza and soda as always!

Sunday, February 20th Meeting

On Sunday, February 20th, the BYAC met for our biweekly meeting. We went over the February 11th event, which was a big hit! We also finalized details for the Bemidji Youth Volunteer Challenge-find it on Facebook (just search Bemidji Youth Volunteer Challenge under Causes). The Challenge has set a goal of 5,000 hours of community service to be done by Bemidji area teens before the June 7th Youth Rally. We also began discussing June 7th, which will be taking place at the water front on, you guessed it, June 7th. We have decided to repeat what we did last year and have a design contest to see what the T-Shirts will look like, as well as laying tentative plans for the shirts to be white, so that students can tye-dye their own while at J7. If you have any input about any of theses topics, feel free to leave  comment!

February Event Summary

Hard Core Stage

The Acoustic Stage

Dodge Ball

Hannah Lash and Inga Roen

Another night has been spent listening to music, playing video games, and hanging out with friends at the Boys and Girls Club of the Bemidji Area. The second annual February Event went off without too many hitches on Friday the 11th, and was attended by close to 200 high school students from Bemidji and the surrounding area. Students enjoyed listening to the music of Your Memorial and Don’t Miss Out on the hard core stage, and local artists like Carrie Sorensen and Caig Jambor on the acoustic stage.  From the four teams that competed, the Soggy Waffles won much fame and prestige, as well as a trophy, by winning the dodge ball tournament, and two gamers walked away with Xbox Live memberships after winning the gaming tournaments. Dunn Bros sold coffee from 6:30 to 9:00, and pizza, available all night, was appreciated by hungry teenagers. We would like to thank the Boys and Girls Club for letting us use their space, as well as all of the people, too many to list here, who helped by allowing us to borrow gaming equipment, agreed to play music for free, or gave their time as chaperons. Everybody had a great time, and we look forward to seeing everyone again next year!

February 11th Event

Coming up the BYAC will be holding its second annual February Event at the Boys and Girls Club on February 11th from 6:30-11:45. Last year we had around 200 high school age students come through the doors and we hope to have even more this year. There will be two stages of live music, like last year, with the band Your Memorial headlining the hard core stage, and many local acoustic acts on the second stage. We will be holding two gaming tournaments: Call of Duty: Black Ops, and Super Smash Brothers, Melee. There will also be  Dance Dance Revolution and Madden 11 free play to anyone interested. The final part of the night will be a dodge ball tournament open to teams of six, so get a team together now! This year should be a great year and should bring a lot of attention to the Boys and Girls Club and give the youth of Bemidji a safe alternative for a Friday night. The event is open to all high school age teens. Hope to see you there!

BYAC Update

Our Crew

Well, as you can see, it has been a while since any activity occurred here, but that is going to change! The BYAC is in the middle of another year of Listening Lunches, teen events and community involvement. Our current officers are Andrew Sherf, President, Kaija Roy, Vice President, Alle Bowman, Secretary, and Jade Hovet, Treasurer. Our other members are Lily Heltzer, Rachel Lash,  Eugene Strowbridge, Hannah Lash, Sierra Beaulieu, and Inga Roen. We have representatives attending the meetings of various community organizations including Bemidji LEADS, HASP, BSU Student Senate, and Evergreen. Plans are being finalized for a youth event on February 11th at the Boys and Girls Club, and we have already begun working on June 7th, 2011. Please feel free to come to us if you have any questions or comments that can help us better achieve our purpose of being the voice of Bemidji youth.

TrekNorth Listening Lunch

On Wednesday, January 19th, a listening lunch was held at TrekNorth High School on the topic of tolerance and LGBT(Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered) issues. Barb Houg with Peacemaker Resources and Candy Roberts came in and talked with about 20 high school students over pizza and soda. Candy answered students’ questions about her experience with being lesbian, and Barb offered some sobering statistics about LGBT students on topics such as suicides and bullying. Students had plenty of questions to keep Barb and Candy talking through the lunch period, and even more time could easily have been filled.

MLK Freedom Walk

This past Sunday members of the BYAC participated in the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Freedom Walk. The walk started at Paul & Babe and ended at the American Indian Resouce Center, where a small meal was provided by other area orginizations. Participants in the Freedom Walk then had the chance to sit down and listen to a variety of presentations including a Native American drum team, the Central Elementary School Choir, and Anton Treuer; the assistant proffessor of Ojibwe languages at BSU.

On 12/03/09 over 55 Bemidji High School students listened and gave input on a presentation by
Marcia Larson, City Parks and Recreation Director. Topics discussed included:
Up to date information about the skate park was presented, which received very supportive comments. Many of the students liked Site Design Group’s ideas for the skate park.
The replacement of Carrington Field was also discussed, the city is actively looking to a new site for the replacement field.
Also though construction will limit use of the City Park next summer, we can also expect an expanded Frolf course and softball fields. In addition, there was discussion the addition of public basketball and tennis courts possibly a splash pad, (a mini-water park with fountains instead of a pool.) Although location was not specified.
Several other issues were discussed including trails, Algoma Park, and park near the Hospital, were discussed.
Next week, a similar presentation will hopefully be held at Trek North.

Memorial Blood Center/JROTC Blood Drive Great Success

The annual BHS blood drive on 12/02/09 was a great success.  Jointly provided by the BHS JROTC and Memorial Blood Center, it allowed volunteers (both student and staff) sixteen years or older to donate a pint of their blood which could save up to three lives.  There was a great turnout, and if this year is any indication, we can expect many eager donors for next year’s drive.  For more information on Memorial Blood Drives and donations, please visit www.mbc.org or call 1-888-Give-Bld.
